Student Services outlines ‘Profile of a Graduate,’ internships, Special Olympics expansion and community resources fair

Profile of a Graduate: The committee said survey data and community feedback produced five draft attributes: critical thinker, personally and socially responsible, self‑empowered, communicator/collaborator, and knowledgeable. Staff said the next step is defining what each attribute looks like at each developmental stage (e.g., kindergarten vs. 12th grade).
Community partnerships and internships: Student Services described a new partnership with the Will County Center for Economic Development to formalize and expand student internships; the program aims to place students in paid summer internships and to create pipelines to local employers.
Inclusion and Special Olympics: Staff reported an increase in extracurricular participation among students with special needs after case managers and schools proactively connected families to activities. The district reported a 67 percent increase in special‑needs students participating in school events overall, a 42 percent increase in high‑school club participation and a 17 percent increase in athletics among students with disabilities over the past year.
Health, wellness and resources: Student Services said the district continues to host screening and health events and reported a recent dental clinic where 31 students received preventive care including exams and cleanings. The district also announced a large community resource fair on Aug. 2 at Plainfield Central High School that will include providers, immunizations, low‑cost dental services, food access and informational sessions on resilience and trauma.
Safety recognition: The district said all schools have been designated “heart safe” after adopting comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans and that Plainfield is among the largest districts in the state to receive that designation.
Next steps: Staff plan to refine the Profile of a Graduate definitions, expand internship placements and continue outreach to increase extracurricular access at the middle‑school level.
