Council Allows Archery Deer Hunting on Clough Island

The Common Council approved an ordinance amending city code section 86‑94 to allow archery deer hunting on Clough Island.
Councilor Brown acknowledged concerns from an individual identified as Mickey about deer welfare but said that overbrowsing and potential starvation on Clough Island make population control necessary. “If you get a deer herd that starts to build up out there, they're going to over browse that island and start to destroy the habitat… and also, if the deer are stuck out there, then they'll start to starve to death out there,” Brown said. He added that much of the venison is donated to the Salvation Army and to families in need.
After discussion, the council approved the ordinance by voice vote.
