Superior council approves rezoning near Catlin and Weeks for two‑family development

The rezoning, introduced by the city planning department, drew one public speaker who urged the council to approve the change as part of filling the city’s housing gap, particularly for single‑level, low‑maintenance homes suited to older residents and downsizers.
“My mother‑in‑law was a tenant in one of Mr. Gustafson’s 20 Eighth Street duplexes for about seven years,” resident Patty Salady told the council. “The comfort and ease of maintenance in that home allowed her to live there independently until age 94. More of this type of housing, all on one level and maintenance free, is greatly needed in Superior.”
Salady said some homeowners may be looking to downsize and that incoming employees from employers she named would increase demand for housing of the type the developer, identified in the hearing as Mr. Gustafson, plans to build. She urged the council to approve the rezoning to help “fill a portion of the city’s housing gap.”
No speakers registered opposition during the public hearing. After the hearing closed, the council approved the rezoning on a voice vote. The record shows the public hearing was opened by the planning department and closed before the council’s voice vote to approve.
