The Carrollton‑Farmers Branch ISD Board of Trustees voted on June 5 to approve demolition of two vacant district buildings: the former Huey building at 2115 E. Frankford Road and the former Sheffield Primary on Kelly Boulevard.
What was approved: Assistant Superintendent Chris Moore described the buildings as long vacant (combined inactivity approaching 11 years) and recounted earlier efforts to sell or donate the properties that were unsuccessful, in part because of building condition and renovation costs. Moore presented district appraisals showing higher land values if the structures were removed: the appraiser estimated combined potential additional land value of roughly $2.75 million if both parcels were vacant lots.
Costs and proceeds: Moore presented a demolition cost estimate of about $1.165 million including contingency; staff said demolition would be funded from the current‑year facilities budget and that proceeds from any later land sale would offset that outlay if a sale occurs. Trustees were advised that a formal land sale is a separate process (surplus designation and statutory steps) and was not before the board for approval.
Board action and discussion: Trustee K. Brady moved to approve demolition; the board seconded and the motion passed 6–1. Trustees asked questions about prior marketing, appraisal comparables and timelines; staff said demolition could start as early as August with site restoration completed in time for post‑winter‑break site readiness if scheduling is followed.
Next steps: staff will manage the demolition contracting, site fencing and environmental/site restoration steps, and will return to the board if and when surplus designation or a land‑sale proposal is developed.
