The International Falls City Council on June 16 approved the slate of election judges and a special absentee‑ballot board for a city special election scheduled for Aug. 12 to decide a citizen petition referendum.
“Since there is no other elections in Koochiching County in August, on August 12 the city is having and holding their own special election… and so we would need to officially approve the election judges,” Administrator Bergstrom explained. Bergstrom said the listed judges have prior training and that state statute requires the city to establish a local absentee ballot board when the county does not administer absentee ballots for a standalone municipal election.
Council members thanked longtime volunteers. A motion to approve the election judges and handling of absentee ballots was passed unanimously; Councillor Buller moved and the motion was seconded by Councillor Holden.
The city will operate two polling places (East Center and West Ward) and an absentee voting location at City Hall for the special election, and staff will carry out absentee processing per state statute.
