The Yonkers City Council on June 10, 2025, voted unanimously to extend the effective date of General Ordinance 10/2024, which modifies parking requirements for senior-citizen housing, setting the new effective date at June 30, 2026.
Supporters said the extension preserves flexibility for developers of senior housing while the city addresses broader parking shortages. Councilwoman Gennada Isaac said the ordinance "allows for the building of more housing" because many senior properties have parking spaces that go unused when residents do not own vehicles.
Resident Philip Armstrong, of 50 Landscape Avenue, spoke during public comment opposing repeated short-term extensions and urged making the rule permanent. "So after this year, the election's over. Next year, what are we gonna do?" Armstrong said. He described citywide parking shortages and added, "Somebody's gotta park someplace, and they can't all ride on on on a public transportation city Yonkers. We know only 20 of the city Yonkers population uses public transportations."
The ordinance being extended is identified in the meeting as General Ordinance 10/2024. According to the council statement during the meeting, the item had been introduced May 20, 2025, referred to the Real Estate Committee, considered at a June 3 Rules meeting and placed on the June 10 council agenda for final action. The council closed discussion and called the roll; the deputy clerk recorded the vote as "Adopted 7 0."
The extension delays the ordinance's original effective date to give the city and developers more time to align parking requirements with senior-housing needs and ongoing housing policy discussions. The council did not adopt any amendment to make the change permanent during the June 10 meeting.
