The Susquehanna Township School District board on July 23 praised the Class of 2025 and discussed student support needs, while Superintendent Dr. Willis announced the district’s participation in a summer meal program for children.
Dr. Willis congratulated graduates and thanked families for supporting a graduation ceremony on June 6 that avoided rain, and told the board the district will participate in a summer meal program. She said free lunches will be available for children through age 18 at a district location and that additional meal sites and hours are listed on the township website.
Several board members used their comments to commend the administration and staff for the graduation production and to raise concerns about students’ social and emotional needs after the COVID years. A board member who attended conferences on COVID impacts said she observed that roughly half of recent graduates displayed hesitation with simple social interactions such as eye contact or handshakes and urged the board to continue investing in behavioral and supportive services. Board members said the district’s intermediate unit and behavioral programs will be important as neighboring districts shift staffing and as the district prepares for potential influxes of students who need additional supports.
Board members and administrators did not vote on new student services at the meeting but discussed upcoming conference attendance and the need to plan for staffing and services. The superintendent asked staff to circulate slides and related program details to board members by email.
The superintendent also encouraged families to consult the township website for summer meal locations and times, noting that township parks host additional meal programs if families cannot reach the district site.
