Federal Way swears in new commander, lieutenants and corporal in public ceremony

Chief Andy Wong introduced the promotions and outlined each officer’s experience before Mayor Farrell administered oaths. Jedediah “Jed” Tan was promoted to commander after more than 16 years with the department; Chief Wong highlighted his roles in field training, SWAT team leadership and community outreach. Hillary Mariani and Charlie Hinkle were promoted to lieutenant; Mariani joined the department in 2017 and has served as a field training officer and defensive-tactics instructor, while Hinkle has 11 years with Federal Way PD and a long tenure in SWAT and training roles. Joseph Rodriguez was sworn in as a corporal after eight years with the department and roles including field training officer and Valley Regional SWAT support.
Each promoted officer was pinned by family members during the ceremony, and Mayor Farrell administered the oaths of office in the council chamber. Mayor and council congratulated the officers and invited department family members for photographs.
Why it matters: Council recognition and public oath mark promotions and leadership transitions in a department responsible for city public safety. The promotions were ceremonial and did not include separate legislative action or budget changes at the meeting.
