Library Director Terry told the board that Nashville Public Library is one of 11 recipients of a Carnegie Corporation grant and will receive $450,000 over two years to expand adult literacy and leveled English-as-a-second-language classes at selected branch locations.
Terry said the adult literacy team (led by manager Jamil) and grants coordinator Martasia collaborated on the successful application. The grant will support partnerships with local organizations, including the Nashville International Center for Empowerment and Metro school-librarian networks, and will enable expanded leveled ESL classes in branch locations.
Sean (foundation representative) and other board members who attended a Carnegie event confirmed that all 11 grantee libraries were represented at a recent conference; Sean said the Carnegie Corporation hosted dinners and gatherings for the grantees. Terry and board members described the award as recognition of the library system’s adult-education efforts and said staff will report back on program roll-out details and branch locations.
No formal board action was required to accept the grant at the meeting; staff said they will proceed with program planning and community partnerships under the grant terms.
