Library pauses weddings at main conference center pending staff, staffing and repair planning

The Library Board directed staff to pause accepting or scheduling weddings at the main library’s conference center until repairs from the main-branch incident are complete and until staff return with formal recommendations about staffing, vendor partnerships and appropriate pricing.

Board members and staff debated whether the library should pursue larger event revenue, maintain low-cost access for patrons with limited means, or partner with external event planners to supply labor and operational support. Georgia (conference-center manager) explained the operational complexity of weddings and said the library’s current small staff must provide extensive set-up, monitoring and breakdown if events continue.

Several board members and staff said they value making the library’s spaces accessible for life events for lower-income patrons but also warned that weddings require substantial staffing and can create wear-and-tear and safety concerns. Rosalind and others suggested a model of a recommended-vendor list or partnerships that would deliver operational labor while the library manages facilities access; other members argued such lists could limit opportunities for smaller local vendors.

Given Georgia’s upcoming retirement and current capacity constraints while the main branch is closed for repairs, the board agreed to pause weddings and asked staff to bring back a written plan describing staffing needs, a cost analysis and options for partnerships or recommended vendors before resuming event bookings. Staff will issue a public notice that weddings are paused until further notice.
