Mooresville approves additional appropriation for police laptops and IT upgrades

The Mooresville Town Council on June 17 approved Ordinance 6-20-25, an additional appropriation to replace aging police laptops and fund related IT upgrades, by a 5-0 vote.
A presenter described that roughly 15 existing laptops cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 and proposed purchasing CF‑30 convertible devices that can dock in squad cradles, removing the need to upgrade older desktop PCs in the squad room. “They’re actually a laptop and the top pops out of them...they’ll be able to put them in a cradle in the squad room,” the presenter said.
Council discussion identified how the purchase would be funded: transfers from the opioid unrestricted fund, the rainy day fund and limited public safety funds, and that a newer quote had been obtained to cover the majority of the expense. The presenter also said the purchase will require vehicle mounts for some units and that the appropriation leaves funds available to address older firewalls discussed in the town’s executive session.
The public hearing on the ordinance attracted no public speakers and the council closed the hearing before moving the ordinance forward. The council then voted 5-0 to approve Ordinance 6-20-25.
The presenter said the town will test universal mounts and power conversions to determine exact vehicle‑fit requirements and will work with IT vendors to schedule any firewall upgrades. No specific vendor was identified at the June 17 meeting.
