The Port Washington Planning Commission on June 19 recommended the Common Council declare 1.85 acres at 425 W. Oakland Ave. surplus so ownership can transfer to Ozaukee County for ecological projects, staff said.
Planning staff described the parcel as “Oakland Green,” a passive open space the city received earlier. Staff said Ozaukee County and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are coordinating a project to restore fish passage at Mineral Springs Creek and to establish prairie plantings; the county has secured a grant for the prairie work.
City staff said the Board of Public Works recommended transfer of ownership to the county in 2022 and again more recently, and that the county is now prepared to accept the property and proceed with the restoration.
A motion to recommend the Common Council declare the parcel surplus was made and seconded; commissioners voted in favor. Staff recommended the council approve the transfer so the county can implement the project and preserve portions of the site as open passive green space for nearby residents.
