Commissioners told of Great River Energy plan to rebuild line; staff says it is separate from earlier Xcel transmission proposal

Commissioners at the June 17 McLeod County Board meeting heard notice of informational meetings from Great River Energy about plans to rebuild and increase voltage on an existing line in the county’s western area.
A commissioner said he had received calls and noted two public open-house meetings: June 18 in Litchfield and June 19 at the Hutchinson Fairgrounds, both scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m., and encouraged public attendance. Staff member Mark told the board Great River Energy’s proposal would rebuild a line and increase its voltage from 69 kV to 115 kV and would tie into an existing line that feeds Hutchinson Utilities.
Mark clarified the Great River Energy work is unrelated to an earlier Xcel Energy transmission project and route that had been considered by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. He told commissioners the Xcel route that had been proposed through McLeod County "did not get chosen."
A commissioner said he planned to attend the Hutchinson open house and urged constituents to review the information and provide input. Mark advised commissioners that the company had scheduled two times for the Hutchinson fairgrounds meeting.
Why it matters: Transmission-line rebuilds and voltage changes can affect county residents’ property, right-of-way negotiations and local utilities. Staff emphasized the project is a rebuild and voltage increase on an existing line and separate from the prior Xcel routing under PUC review.
