Juliet Applewhite, president of the Half Moon Bay History Association, presented the nonprofit’s work to the City Council on June 17, outlining volunteer efforts to open and run a local history museum and to provide schools with curriculum and oral histories.
Applewhite said the association — donor‑funded and volunteer‑run — operates an interpretive “jail museum” and a larger barn/garage museum, maintains a cataloged collections program with oral histories and coordinates an education team that has previously reached local third‑grade classes and hosted school visits. The group completed work under an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to support education programming and is working to finish curricula focused on high school levels.
She said the city granted a 25‑year lease to develop a larger museum at a barn/garage property and that volunteers refurbished the building, installed solar, created an ADU bathroom and developed a native plant garden for interpretive signage. The museum runs a quarterly speaker series and a quarterly publication, the Coastside Chronicles.
Council members thanked Applewhite for the volunteer work and said the museum contributes to downtown visitor experience and local education. No formal council action was taken; council members encouraged continued partnership and public visibility for the museum.
