The Common Council on May 27 adopted a resolution authorizing a home-rule request to amend the General Municipal Law to permit the City of White Plains to lease advertising on sports-field fences in city parks.
A council speaker explained that state approval is required because the fields are in municipal parks, and that existing law requires any revenue from such advertising be given to a nonprofit which must spend the money in the park where the signs are located. The council said the change mirrors programs in other municipalities and thanked state legislators for their assistance in crafting enabling language.
The resolution was moved, seconded and adopted by the council; no specific sites, lease terms or nonprofit partners were approved at the meeting. The action forwards the city's request to state officials to permit advertising leases on park fences once state law is amended.
