The White Plains Common Council approved amendments to the capital and operating budgets to establish a feasibility study and implementation plan for an intergenerational community center.

Council members described the study as a necessary early step to assess whether the city can replace the current senior center with a larger, multipurpose hub that serves seniors, youth and other community groups. Councilman Payne called the study “forward thinking,” noting the senior center and many youth programs lack sufficient space; Councilman Justin Brash and Councilwoman Pooja urged the city to plan a state‑of‑the‑art facility that consolidates services and provides programming across age groups.

Councilmember remarks emphasized the study’s role as planning — not a construction authorization — and said the feasibility work will evaluate space needs, financial viability and potential reuse of existing facilities such as the Slater Center. The council later authorized a contract with La Bella Associates, DPC to undertake the feasibility study and create an implementation plan.

The measure was included in the consent agenda the council adopted by roll call Jan. 6. Council members requested outreach during the study so residents and existing program leaders have input on functional needs and locations.
