Board approves phone-hardware purchase to update county telephony

The Story County Board of Supervisors approved a quote June 17 to replace the county’s desk phones and to purchase a set of wireless headsets for staff testing and choice of office configurations.
Joe Wakeman presented a Heartland Business Systems quote to replace the county’s desk phones and to buy 15 wireless headsets. Wakeman said the county will allow staff to choose either a desk phone or a headset and will keep a small inventory for flexibility; unused or returned devices can be resold to lower net cost. He said individual headsets run about $200 and desk phones about $170.
The initial outlay presented to the board was described in the meeting as roughly $54,000; Wakeman noted the county will receive credits for returned equipment and can sell existing devices to offset costs. Supervisor Fazel moved approval, a second was recorded, and Supervisors Faisal and Merkin voted “aye.” The purchase was approved.
The board did not adopt a formal policy mandating single-device use; staff will implement distribution and a limited loan pool for training and temporary needs.
