The Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) told the Government Operations Committee on June 24 that it has amended Tennessee Promise rules to allow students to bank community‑service hours and carry them from one semester or year into another.
Lou Hanneman and Peter Abernathy of TSAC said the change does not reduce the total number of community‑service hours required to remain eligible for Tennessee Promise; it simply allows students greater flexibility to complete and bank the hours during periods such as summer breaks and apply them to the academic year.
The committee approved the change with a positive recommendation. TSAC and lawmakers said the adjustment aims to reduce scheduling friction for students and partnering community organizations while maintaining the program’s service expectations.
