BRN committee clears several campus moves, enrollment increases and feasibility requests; some programs deferred for compliance review

Consent and minor items: The committee approved consent agenda items on minor curriculum revisions, clinical facility approvals and program progress reports. Mary Anne McCarthy, the committee—s nursing education consultant liaison, described the board—s standard process for reviewing curricular changes and clinical facility approvals and noted the committee may recommend approval while staff make nonsubstantive corrections to materials.
Campus move: The committee recommended acceptance of National University—s request to move its San Diego campus location about 16 miles to its San Diego headquarters, saying a staff virtual visit found the planned site appropriate for student needs and clinical arrangements.
Enrollment increases and initial approvals: The committee recommended approval of several enrollment increases and initial site requests after staff review, including: - Citrus College (associate degree): recommended to increase from 30 to 60 students per cohort, creating annual enrollment of 120. - Simpson University (baccalaureate): recommended to increase from 56 to 90 students annually (45 twice a year). - Samuel Merritt University (Sacramento): committee recommended conditional approval (see separate article) for ELM and ABSN increases pending clinical-site verification.
New campus feasibility and initial approvals: The committee accepted feasibility materials or initial self-studies for several new or secondary sites, including Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts (secondary campus in San Jose), Unitek College (San Jose feasibility accepted), and California Nurses Educational Institute (Rancho Mirage/Palm Desert feasibility). Gurnick—s self-study adjusted initial start dates and enrollment pattern because of a delayed start; BRN staff said the change does not alter the overall enrollment totals previously approved.
Programs found in noncompliance: The committee also reviewed programs already on the board—s noncompliance lists and deferred action for programs that have recently had continuing approval visits but need time to return to compliance. Cabrillo College and Imperial Valley College were discussed as first-time noncompliance matters after recent visits and will report progress to assigned nursing education consultants.
The committee—s approvals are recommendations to the full board; final ratification or action will occur at the board meeting in August.
