Craven County Schools reports scholarship winners, high test completion and graduations in June update

Craven County Schools provided a June district update at a board meeting covering scholarship awards, assessment completion, graduation ceremonies and staff recognitions.
The update, delivered by Jennifer Wagner, reported that nine students were selected as A.H. Bankert Scholarship recipients from 36 applications, that the district reached a 99 percent combined completion rate for end-of-grade and end-of-course testing, and that all six traditional high schools held commencement ceremonies producing 971 graduates in May.
Wagner listed the nine A.H. Bankert Scholarship recipients and their schools: Cassidy Kent, Craven Early College; Kiera Vernet, Early College East; Tamaya Brown, Havelock High School; Tyler Still, Havelock High School; Christopher Barrett, New Bern High School; Taylor Best, New Bern High School; Davon Majors, New Bern High School; Joseph Carroll, West Craven High; and Allison McElroney, West Craven High. The district noted that statewide test results remain embargoed until the State Board of Education approves them in the fall.
Wagner said the last day of school for traditional schools was May 22 and that the district is planning its first days: early colleges on Aug. 4 and traditional schools on Aug. 25. She also described a beginning-teachers end-of-year cookout held May 29 at H.J. McDonald School, attended by approximately 40 beginning teachers and with food provided by Craven Q.
Facilities staff were honored at a May 27 celebration presented by Jerome Williams and Randy Spite. Awards named in the update included Custodian of the Year Kelvin Stewart, Maintenance Technician of the Year Richie Hardison and a Director's Choice award to Perry Schuler. Grover C. Fields Middle School was recognized as the cleanest school of the year.
The district’s school nutrition staff received awards at a May 28 event that began with a memorial for Deborah Jones of Vanceboro Farm Life. Wagner read a list of retiree recognitions that included Sabrina Britt, manager at Oaks Road Academy; Janelle Stone; Arthur Edwards; and Vicky White. Schools reporting 100 percent health inspection scores in the update included A.H. Bangert, Creekside Elementary, Vanceboro Farm Life, Havelock High School and James W. Smith.
Wagner characterized these items as district celebrations and informational updates; the board did not take formal action on the matters reported during the update.
