The School Committee voted June 16 to approve updated guidelines and pay rates for the Kids in Action (KIA) before-and-after-school program.
The administration told the committee it consolidated two prior guideline documents (for employees working under and over 20 hours) into a single unified document. The approved changes include modest increases to lead stipends, assistant teacher hourly rates (to better align with district assistant teacher rates), and the inclusion of paid positions for high school students working as helpers.
Ayesha Opong, director of business, described program growth: KIA now operates before- and after-school programs at each elementary school and expanded to five preschool classrooms. The administration said revenue allowed increases in assistant teacher rates and a small raise in lead stipends; last year’s larger changes had increased sick days, vacation and longevity.
Committee members moved to approve the updated guidelines and rates; the motion passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The committee and staff thanked Jackie Sansone and program leads for implementing and expanding the program and for creating a set of lead staff and a new assistant director role.
