Lakewood Promise advisory board reports youth‑led programs, sets goals including transportation and financial literacy

Lakewood, Wash. — Members of the Lakewood Promise advisory board presented the board’s 2024–25 accomplishments and a new work plan at the June 16 council meeting, emphasizing youth leadership and a compact set of priorities for the coming year.
Board chair Alice Fung and member Joyce Loveday described a youth summit held in early May at Harrison Prep that engaged 132 students and was largely planned by young people, who selected breakout topics, food and marketing approaches. The board also supported a “cook and craft” event that drew 27 students and planned a new summer financial literacy workshop on July 24 in partnership with the nonprofit Your Money Matters.
The advisory board’s draft work plan focuses on four areas the youth prioritized: financial literacy programming, transportation strategies for youth, communications to broaden engagement beyond the youth council, and sustaining Lakewood Promise’s five guiding promises (caring adults, safe places, healthy starts, marketable skills and opportunities to help others). Youth council liaison Elijah Saana and other youth leaders helped design and implement recent events, the board said.
Councilmembers praised the youth summit and encouraged continued focus on transportation, with one councilmember noting prior difficulty in developing comprehensive transportation solutions for young people and urging the youth to propose practical, implementable strategies.
