Depew schools outline priorities in district comprehensive improvement plan

Savannah, a district staff member, presented the Depew Union Free School District’s District Comprehensive Improvement Plan on May 27, outlining priorities in climate, engagement and achievement.
The presentation said the district has provided TAPE training for staff (described in the presentation as trauma and illicit grief training), conducted social-emotional surveys of faculty, students and families, participated with BOCES community schools work, and opened a family resource center at Keough Heights. Savannah said the district is collaborating with Families Aim Toward Excellence (FATE) and plans to hire an in-house social worker next year.
On engagement, the presentation described use of ThoughtExchange for community feedback and cited Depew Discovery Night and collaborative athletics/team-building work as outreach efforts. On achievement, staff described development of the district’s MTSS (multi-tiered systems of support) structure and an ongoing curriculum-mapping project for grades 6–12 with plans to begin elementary mapping next year.
Savannah said money from the district comprehensive improvement grant is being used to fund an ELA academic intervention teacher at the middle school this year and will continue to support that position in the coming year to increase flexibility in student services.
Board members asked whether the MTSS plan and curriculum maps would be posted online; Savannah replied the MTSS plan is not yet posted and that curriculum maps will be put on the website when completed. No formal vote or action on the plan was recorded during the presentation.
