The Kent City Council voted 7-0 June 17 to award a public-works contract for median drainage repairs on State Route 167 at South 220th Street to Scarcella Brothers Inc. for $458,581.
Public Works Director Chad Barron said the work is a follow-up to the city’s 220th Street extension project and is required by permit conditions. “We opened this bridge back in 2019,” Barron said, and the city drilled three piers in the median area; the roadway settled slightly and “on a very rainy day, the water starts to accumulate right there, underneath our bridge piers. We need to go back in there as part of our permit conditions and repair that.”
Barron explained the contract work will add slotted drains between northbound and southbound lanes, connect a catch basin to remove water from the freeway, and repave a portion of the HOV lanes. The project was advertised and received two bids; Scarcella Brothers submitted the low bid of $458,581 against an engineer’s estimate of $453,000.
The council motion approved award of the contract and authorized the mayor to sign documents subject to final terms acceptable to the city attorney and public-works director. The motion passed 7–0.
