Kent police warn copper thefts cutting telecom lines, risking 911 service

Sergeant Chelsea Perbo of the Kent Police Department warned in a public announcement that copper thefts are cutting telecom cables and disrupting Internet, phone and emergency 911 service. "Thieves are targeting telecom cables, cutting lines that power your Internet, phone, and even 911 services," Perbo said.
The thefts have knocked students offline, interrupted businesses and left residents and people working from home without service, Perbo said. "Students can't access online classes, businesses lose sales, people working from home are cut off, and even emergency services may be delayed," she said. The department said investigators are working the cases and that prosecutors will pursue charges where appropriate: "We're investigating and will prosecute, but we need your help," Perbo said.
Police asked anyone who sees suspicious activity around cable lines or who has information about the thefts to report it by calling 911. "If you see someone tampering with cable lines or know anything about these crimes, report it by calling 911. Your tip could keep someone safe," Perbo said. The announcement closed with the advisory, "If you see something, say something."
