Landfill operator reports new gas wells, expanded cell and potential RNG project

At the June 17 Clinton County commissioners meeting, landfill representatives updated the board on operations including recently installed gas wells, slope seeding and an expanded cell plan that could extend disposal capacity into the fall.
Michael Krutzinger introduced Bill Corbett as the new operations manager and said staff are seeding roughly 20 acres on several slopes visible from the road and have performed drainage repairs to correct recent storm-related sloughing. "We removed that obstruction and took it all the way to the west down that channel like it was supposed to be flowing," Corbett said of recent berm work intended to channel storm water.
Krutzinger told commissioners the landfill installed about 19 gas wells in an older cluster of cells to reduce odors and nuisance conditions. He also reported the footprint of an upcoming cell (cell 7) was increased from about 4.5 acres to roughly 9 acres with a target to enter that cell in October. Krutzinger said the vendor doing the seeding will also mow portions of the Clinton County side and perform some ditch work along Walnut.
The landfill is also on a corporate "book of business" for a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant, Krutzinger said. He characterized the RNG proposal as "in the works" and estimated a possible 2027 timeframe if the project is approved at corporate levels, emphasizing that it is not yet finalized.
Commissioners and staff also discussed community service contributions from the landfill under the county's contractual agreement; Krutzinger said the landfill's community service portion will be delivered in August. The board heard resident concerns about weeds along 300 North and was told the vendor handling seeding will address mowing and ditch work when conditions allow.
Staff framed the drainage repairs as completed on the interior berm and said they were monitoring the site following heavy rains. No formal vote was recorded on operational matters; the update was delivered for information and scheduling.
