GUYMON, Okla. — The Guymon Convention and Tourism Board on June 19 discussed raising small beautification grants to attract more applicants, funding for public murals and details on Delpark park amenities, and asked staff to return with a formal action item on grant funding at the next meeting.
Board members said the board has received repeated requests to increase the current small grant award — described in the meeting as $5,000 — to $10,000 to make projects more feasible for local businesses and property owners. One board member summarized the sentiment: "I think I just want the money to be used, honestly." The same speaker also suggested allowing repeat recipients who have completed an initial project to qualify for larger, one-time grants of $15,000 to $20,000.
The board discussed an earlier, larger matching program previously described by a member as a "mega grant" that would allow applicants to seek up to $20,000 in matching funds, available once every five years. A board member said that original concept could be revived or adapted if the board chooses to pursue larger, less frequent awards.
On murals and public art, board members and staff said they have artists interested in painting murals across town but need a clear plan and permissions before committing funds. "If something was presented to him, then it's something that he can review and approve of," a board member said about staff review; the meeting record shows staff member Mike was not present and would be asked to review proposals.
Staff reported that new brochures are in production after the board finalized an agreement with a vendor; staff said mockups were received and returned with edits. "We finally got everything approved with the flat with the company, and our brochures are in the process," a staff member said.
Members also reviewed progress at Delpark: a water fountain with two levels (including a lower level described for dogs) has been delivered, and benches, picnic tables and barbecue pits were expected the following week. Board members discussed restroom access at Delpark and estimated that a modular, ADA-compliant restroom unit would cost roughly $80,000 to purchase and install; crowd-funding estimates mentioned during the meeting ranged around $10,000 but would not cover the full cost. One board member said they had requested quotes for a modular restroom to compare costs with site-built construction.
Board members asked staff to place a formal discussion or action item about the grant program on the next meeting agenda so the board could consider a budget adjustment or other steps before the end of the quarter, to allow application windows in the third and fourth quarters of the year.
