The Sandusky Boards & Commissions voted to approve a variance permitting a 6-foot fence in the side yard at 526 Barrett Road, a two-foot relief from the 4-foot maximum set in the zoning code.
Staff described the property as zoned R-1.75, located near the intersection of Venice Road, Garrett Road and McCartney Road, and said the fence segment in question falls inside the side yard. Staff recommended approval, noting the irregular configuration of the applicant’s lot and that other zoning requirements would be met provided the applicant obtained all required permits prior to construction.
Property owner Brian Brown told the board he had the property surveyed and asked to extend an existing fence along the property line. “I have my exact property line. I mean, I paid out of pocket for it,” Brown said. Neighbor Dave Coy spoke in favor, telling the board the proposed work would “improve my chances of selling someday” and that Brown had “been nothing but beautifying our neighborhood.”
No public opposition spoke during the hearing. A member moved to approve the variance with the condition that all applicable permits be obtained through the building and engineering departments and any other applicable agencies; the motion carried on a roll call with William Siemens, Blake Harris, John Fike and Dan Delahunt voting in favor.
The outcome allows the applicant to construct the fence at the 6-foot height identified in the application only after obtaining the permits required by the building and engineering departments.
The board’s approval applies to the zoning variance only; any building-permit review remains subject to the city’s building and engineering requirements.
