The public‑works/parks representative said the city manages roughly 3,000 public ash trees in rights of way, parks and the municipal golf course and that those trees face “serious threat of decimation” over the next one to four years. The figure cited does not include privately owned ash trees or ash inside the Superior Municipal Forest. Staff said removals have started in the north‑end neighborhood and that the tree board will meet next week to develop recommendations for council review at a subsequent meeting; staff provided a press release, FAQ and photos as part of the meeting packet.
When asked, staff recommended private owners be responsible for removing their own ash trees but suggested the council might consider providing a disposal site or other assistance. Councilors asked for more detailed recommendations and the staff said they will present options following the tree‑board meeting.
