Marjorie Goldberg used the meeting’s public comment period on June 16 to describe a concept for a senior artist living community that would combine private living units with shared studio, performance and exhibition spaces tailored for older artists.
Goldberg said the model would include features to support residents with memory loss, single-level shared dining and community spaces, workshop and studio areas for painting, wood and metal work, and opportunities for public programs and a DC museum. She said she is speaking with developers and plans to apply for CAH support: “I am hoping I'm gonna apply for your building community grant … hiring an architect and starting the ball rolling,” Goldberg said.
Why it matters: Goldberg framed the proposal as a “final project” to provide affordable live/work options for older and practicing artists and as a potential citywide model. Commissioners acknowledged the idea and encouraged her to submit a grant application; staff confirmed CAH’s Building Community RFA is an available funding route.
Ending: Goldberg said she was contacting developers and community partners and invited commissioners to be part of a committee; CAH staff indicated they would review any forthcoming Building Community grant application through the standard panel process.
