The Commission on the Arts and Humanities voted on June 16 to amend its bylaws to create a Community Advisory Committee meant to advise commissioners and staff on community engagement and cultural authenticity across CAH programs.
Commissioner Julianne Brienza, chair of the governance committee, said the new committee “shall support the commission in further engaging DC's artistic community” and “ensure[] that the authenticity of DC's cultural culture is expressed and supported through the arts.” Commissioner Grace (committee co-lead) and others described the committee as a “conscience of the commission” to keep programs and grantmaking grounded in community needs.
Why it matters: The committee is designed to focus the commission’s outreach to historically underserved neighborhoods and inform grant and program priorities. Brienza said the governance committee will review alignment with other board committees at a final meeting on Sept. 25, 2025.
Vote and next steps: The chair called a roll for the amendment. Commissioners signaled support in the roll call and the proposal passed. The governance committee will set workflow and focus areas and report to the commission quarterly or as needed.
Ending: The amendment will be incorporated into the bylaws as Article 6, Section 7; the governance committee will confirm operational details and coordination with other committees ahead of the next fiscal year.
