Summary
District food-service contractor Chartwells presented planned menu changes, a districtwide breakfast program for next school year, and a shift in federal commodity sourcing to known vendors and Department of Defense produce.
Chartwells, the Marlboro Township School District's food-service provider, presented to the board on district meal rules, planned menu additions and a districtwide breakfast rollout for next school year.
The company explained the National School Lunch Program requirements — including USDA meal-pattern rules, Offer Versus Serve options and upcoming sugar and sodium limits — and described a shift away from unidentified "brown box" commodities toward vendor-tracked products and Department of Defense produce that will bring fresh fruits and vegetables into school kitchens.
Chartwells representatives said new lunch items next year will include whole-muscle chicken, fresh-made pico de gallo, salads, wraps and some organic a la carte snacks. They also said organic milk will be available beginning Sept. 1. The company said a districtwide breakfast program will begin next year; officials are still finalizing logistics with principals on whether breakfast will be served before the bell or during the school day.
The presentation included a proposed approach to nutrition education. Chartwells described its Discovery Kitchen program — a cafeteria-based tasting or grade-level presentation — and suggested the district's wellness committee or principals could help schedule presentations. Board members and parents praised Vinny (Chartwells' local director) for accommodating special dietary requests and piloting items at individual schools.
Public commenters raised related concerns: one asked whether elementary students have sufficient time to eat and urged extending lunch by five to ten minutes; administrators said they would investigate lunch-period length with principals.
The presentation encouraged continued parent and staff input and said Chartwells will offer a tasting of new products before the school year starts.
Ending: District administrators and Chartwells said they will continue planning over the summer and return with implementation details and communications for families before September.
