City Department of Public Works staff updated the Transportation and Parking Commission on ongoing summer pavement, signal and bicycle monitoring projects on June 17.
The update matters because planned paving, sidewalk and signal maintenance will affect traffic, parking and active‑transportation routes through the summer construction season.
Director Donna Escalia said the bikeway resurfacing project is “substantially complete” and staff are working on punch‑list items. She reported MassDOT arranged for a contractor, Polar Vortex, to repaint traffic signal poles at Finn and King Street, Finn and State Street, and King North and Summer Street after earlier paint delamination. Escalia said police detail is assisting with traffic control during those operations and that DPW has advertised contracts for signal maintenance, emergency pothole repairs and a mill‑and‑overlay paving project.
Planning staff also advised a bike counter will be installed on the shared‑use path behind Stop & Shop. Carolyn Mich said the device will be chained to a post and left in place for roughly a year to collect usage data.
Escalia said the mayor’s office will publish a formal communication about sidewalk and paving schedules by the end of the month and asked the commission to direct traffic‑related questions to MassDOT District 2 when appropriate. No formal action was requested or taken on these informational items.
