Opelika council rezones two Simmons Street parcels, hears first reading on Birmingham Highway annexation

The Opelika City Council on June 17 approved a rezoning ordinance for two parcels on Simmons Street and received a first reading on a proposed annexation along Birmingham Highway.
A staff presentation said the rezoning ordinance, which received a positive recommendation from the planning commission, would change parcels at 401 and 409 Simmons Street from an M-1 industrial district to a C-2 office/retail district. The council moved, seconded and approved the ordinance on second reading by roll call.
The council also heard the first reading of an ordinance to annex about 7.6 acres in the 3,800 block of Birmingham Highway. The property is owned by Perelman Hill LLC; the ordinance was introduced by a council member and advanced as a first reading. No final vote was taken on the annexation during the meeting.
Staff framed the rezoning as consistent with the planning commission’s recommendation and provided no additional conditions during council discussion. The annexation will return for future readings as required by ordinance.
