Alice council approves resolution to seek TxDOT sidewalk connectivity grant

The Alice City Council voted to adopt a resolution authorizing submission of an application to the Texas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives set-aside program to fund a sidewalk connectivity project.
A city staff presenter said the detailed application is due in June and that TxDOT officials will announce awards in October. The proposed phase one work would add roughly 4,634 linear feet of sidewalk connecting Fifth Street, South Reynolds, Third, Second and First streets to Main Street and North King Street. The presenter said the grant would be 100% with no local match and estimated the project at about $2 million.
Councilmember Benton asked for clarification of the route on the map shown during the presentation, and staff walked the council through the green-highlighted areas representing phase one. The presenter said the city has applied to this program before and narrowly missed funding last year; staff have met with TxDOT and hope to secure the award this cycle.
The council moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote. If awarded, staff said the council will return for further action once the award and project scope are confirmed.
