Several Osceola County department heads reported operational updates to the Board of Supervisors, including progress on FEMA reimbursements, inspections, parks activity and staffing.
The county treasurer’s office described fiscal-year work: preparing homestead and military exemptions, reconciling abstracts to send to the state and preparing tax statements. The county engineer reported that FEMA reimbursements are beginning to arrive for signage and debris removal and that FEMA will reinspect the I‑15 bridge near POET after staff raised concerns about the initial damage description.
The engineer said an asphalt project south of town has no contractor start date yet but is expected to begin in September or later. A culvert contractor is waiting for completion of a second culvert before starting Oak Hill Culverts; chip-seal work was complete and striping expected in a week or two. The county has taken possession of a new folding plow budgeted this fiscal year.
Parks staff said campgrounds and the lodge have been busy, crews were addressing storm tree damage, and seasonal hiring was underway. The sheriff reported a new deputy hire pending completion of a physical and academy enrollment expected later in the year; the sheriff also said the office will transition inmate mental-health services from ITP to a vendor called FlowState after reviewing endorsements from other sheriffs.
A veterans resource event organized by county staff and volunteers drew representatives from the Sioux Falls VA and veterans groups; organizers said turnout was positive and that they plan another event in the fall. County emergency-services staff also reported progress on first-responder certifications and opioid-fund purchases to support local responders.
County planning staff said the housing needs assessment bid process is complete and they expect to hire a consultant in the next two weeks; grant-application windows opened the same day and staff will notify applicants and update county communications.
These updates were presented as informational reports during the meeting; no formal board actions were taken on the items discussed in this segment.
