Crowley aldermen voted unanimously Tuesday to dedicate the 1600 block of West Seventh Street — from Dr. F.L. Johnson Avenue to Marcel Thomas Avenue — in honor of Nelson Arseneault.
The resolution, offered by Alderman Vernon Martin and seconded by Alderman Byron Wilridge, passed on a roll call vote after family members addressed the board during the meeting in the council chambers.
The naming recognizes what proponents described as Arseneault’s lifetime of public service. Alderman Vernon Martin told the board, “Everything that you read is a factual thing,” as he introduced the measure and invited family to speak. Frederick Arseneault, identified in the meeting as Nelson Arseneault’s son, and other relatives attended and spoke in support of the dedication.
Mayor and aldermen discussed logistics for a public event tied to the naming; the family was told the dedication observance will be held July 4, and seating will be reserved for family. Council members and staff noted sign production and coordination with public works would follow the council’s action.
The resolution was added to the agenda earlier in the meeting at Martin’s request and then approved by roll call (Chuck Ashby, Katie Chasson, Brad Coore, Jeff Dorey, Dickey Loggley, Vernon Martin, Sandy Marks, Samuel Reggie and Byron Wilridge voted yes).
The council recorded no additional conditions in the resolution; aldermen said they will coordinate with the family and city staff on timing and signage.
