Hal Luke addressed the council on June 17 to describe pickleball activity at the Murray Active Aging Center (the Murray Senior Center), sharing the game’s local history and current participation.
Luke said pickleball began at the center in about 2009, initially by taping off a courtyard. About five to six years ago the center added two courts in the southeast corner of the property. He described regular morning play during warm months — players arrive about 7 a.m. and play two to three hours — and smaller daytime play during winter months. Luke told the council there have been mornings with as many as 25 players and that on the day he visited there were 14 players, four of them women.
He highlighted the center’s non‑competitive culture and the availability of beginner and intermediate classes at the facility. Luke also noted the presence of long‑active players in their 90s; he identified two men shown in a photo, Lee (age 98) and Ralph (age 96), who had won medals at senior games in St. George several years prior.
Council members asked practical questions about court locations and potential additional sites, mentioning parks with underused tennis courts as candidates for conversion. Luke said other municipal courts — including at Riverview and Myrtle parks — draw heavy use and suggested the city consider court placement that balances demand and neighborhood impacts.
The presentation did not trigger a council vote but provided civic leaders with context about a growing senior‑center program and volunteer efforts to maintain the playing area.
