The Logan Library director told the City Council on Tuesday that the library updated its fines-and-fees schedule to include items the new public makerspace will sell at cost (such as 3D-printer filament) and to simplify meeting-room fees.
"We realized that that fees list did not include items that we would be, selling at the maker space, mainly, filament and just supplies that we would be selling mostly at cost," the Library Director said, explaining the change and noting the edits also remove redundant language and clarify copying charges.
The director said the makerspace is scheduled to open in early July and that meeting-room fees will retain a community/nonprofit exemption: paid commercial users will be charged while community and nonprofit groups will continue to receive free or reduced-cost access. The director also said the proposed fee updates are editorial in part and will be presented to the library board for approval at upcoming meetings.
Council members asked whether the meeting rooms will remain free for nonprofit and community use; the director confirmed the two-tier approach remains: community use versus commercial use. A council member also asked when the makerspace would open; the director replied, "We're getting for early July so we're, we're this close. This is part of it." The council invited questions and offered to distribute the mayor’s proposed budget link to help the public find posted materials.
No formal council vote occurred on the fee changes at Tuesday's meeting; staff said the library board will consider formal approval at its next meetings and that the makerspace launch will proceed pending final board actions and supply arrangements.
