The Ashley Valley Education Center (AVEC) told the Uintah County School District board on June 18 that the program served 1,628 students this school year across day school, online, night school, summer school and adult education, and that AVEC graduates accounted for 88 of 455 students who crossed the Uinta High School stage at the district graduation.
"AVEC is the best school in the world," director Andy said when introducing the report. AVEC staff said their mission is to help students complete classes, build skills and earn diplomas or GEDs; the center services students for brief enrollments up to full-year enrollment and provides flexible pathways including online and on-campus options.
AVEC reported 4,569 classes completed and 388 instances this year in which a 9'12 student earned 2.5 credits in a trimester. The director told the board the on-line student cohort is typically caught up for graduation and the on-campus cohort includes more students who need targeted credit recovery. The district noted that some juniors graduated early under AVEC programs.
AVEC presented a long-term graduation-rate chart showing steady improvement over many years, with particularly notable gains after 2020 as the program scaled its online offerings. The director said the center's weekly professional learning-community meetings and individualized prescriptions for students are central to results and credited staff collaboration for the gains.
Board members thanked AVEC staff for the work. AVEC officials said their numbers will continue to change slightly as summer school completes next week and adult-education credentialing continues to be reported.
