The Jefferson Union High School District board voted to adopt OpenSciEd — an open-source science curriculum — for chemistry and physics beginning with the 2025–26 school year, following a yearlong pilot and district review.
The adoption followed a multi-year review process led by Dr. Laurie Robinson, who described the materials as open-source units that include student-facing handouts, translated Spanish materials and investigation kits. "OpenSciEd and that is its full name, not an abbreviation, by the way," Robinson told the board, and noted the materials emphasize anchoring phenomena, investigation and collaboration.
The district piloted OpenSciEd units in physics and chemistry during 2023–24 and convened teachers to review the experience. Robinson said teachers reported both strengths and concerns: educators praised the phenomena-driven approach and student engagement, while some raised reservations about adopting a nontraditional, non‑textbook resource and platform usability. Robinson described a supplemental vendor, Activate Learning, that bundles kits and an online platform but said the district found the kits required hands‑on assembly and the platform experience mixed.
Board members asked about student outcomes and asked whether the pilot produced measurable test-score improvements. Robinson said pilot use varied across teachers and units and that the district does not yet have district‑level standardized test comparisons tied to the pilot; she said the district plans more local evaluation in coming pilots and will map OpenSciEd units to the district scope and sequence.
The board discussed implementation steps: teacher teams will map OpenSciEd to local scope and sequence, the district will pilot OpenSciEd in biology next year, and staff will explore different vendors or platform options (including a new OpenSciEd Google Classroom button) to ease classroom integration. The board voted to adopt the materials; the motion passed with the board recording voices in favor and no roll‑call tally noted.
District staff emphasized that adopting OpenSciEd does not remove scope and sequence work: "the scope and sequence isn't going away," Robinson said; rather, teachers will integrate OpenSciEd units with local curriculum priorities and may localize phenomena to Bay Area contexts.
Implementation will include professional learning for teachers and continued collection of teacher and student feedback; the district also plans to assemble materials locally rather than rely solely on third‑party kits that did not meet teacher expectations.
