Waupaca Parks Department begins site prep for recreation center expansion; groundbreaking next week

The Waupaca Parks and Recreation Department told the common council on June 17 that site preparation for the recreation center expansion will begin this week and demolition of the annex building could start as soon as next week.
Laura Colbert, Parks and Recreation Director, said officials "are moving forward, and the projected timeline is that we are hoping to be done by late spring to early summer next year." She invited council members and the public to a groundbreaking ceremony next Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Colbert also announced related near‑term items: a goose roundup to reduce droppings at city beaches, a comprehensive outdoor recreation visioning session scheduled for tomorrow at 5:30 p.m., and summer events including an outdoor movie on Aug. 12 and a new city parks bus tour on Aug. 27 that will visit 14 parks and other city recreation sites.
Colbert highlighted a recently completed accessibility improvement: an Eagle Scout, Adam Nierig, installed ADA beach access mats at Lower South Park that allow people with strollers, walkers or wheelchairs to reach the water more easily. She credited volunteers and partnering departments — parks, library, facilities and city media — for programming and outreach this summer.
No formal council action was taken; the department report was informational and includes a request that staff continue coordination on the expansion and the announced public events.
