Family outreach coordinator reports 89 referrals and partnership supports in first year

Teresa O'Con, the family outreach coordinator for West Chicago Community High School (District 94), reported to the board on June 17 the first year outcomes of the position she fills.
O'Con said the outreach effort received more than 89 referrals from staff and that the coordinator role connected families to financial assistance, emergency housing resources, transportation and mental‑health services. She told the board 19 families received direct financial assistance through community partners, most of it to secure housing after crises such as a household fire. O'Con described a case in which quick coordination restored a student's school attendance after the family received emergency housing and essentials.
She said the role also co‑hosted a parent café in partnership with District 33 to create a safe space for families, and staff attended a VPAC summit to strengthen bilingual and bicultural engagement. The coordinator asked for continued board support to expand the work and reach more families. The superintendent and other board members praised her impact during the first year and noted the role has planted “seeds” for expanded family engagement.
