Bowling Green schools: new high school site progressing; 50 of 140 geothermal wells drilled

At the Bowling Green City School District Board of Education meeting on June 17, 2025, a facilities presenter updated the board and public on construction of the district’s new high school.

The presenter said approximately 50 of the planned 140 vertical geothermal wells had been drilled to date; each well is about 300 feet deep. Two drilling rigs are currently on site, with a third expected by the end of the month. The presenter said the well field will provide heating and cooling for the new high school and that a stone area for temporary construction trailers has been installed and perimeter fencing will be erected soon.

The presenter said bids for the steel and concrete packages are expected back in the coming days and that the list of bidders is “fairly long.” The presenter said the district remains on budget “at this date.” The update also noted that some trees in the footprint of the new building and drives were removed during site work.

The presenter described recent and planned coordination with city safety leaders: the design team recently met with Chief Justin White and will hold a safety and security meeting with Chief Bill Morman later in the week; those meetings are intended to incorporate law enforcement and fire input into the building’s design. No city officials spoke at the board meeting.

There was no formal board action recorded on the construction update during the meeting; the item was presented as an informational progress report.
