At its June 16 meeting the Cumberland Town Council authorized the town manager to accept $22,439.90 in payment to clear delinquent taxes, fees and charges on property identified as tax map U19 Lot 10B for tax years 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Town Manager Sturgis summarized the case: the property had become delinquent while the estate for the owner was open, staff researched title and notices, and an heir came forward and submitted payment to redeem the property. Sturgis said the town incurred costs while the parcel was in a tax‑foreclosure status, including lock replacement and recording charges, and that the payment makes the town "complete and whole." Once the payment is accepted, staff will prepare and issue a release deed so the family can pursue probate and obtain clear title.
Councilor Vail asked generally about the town's options after properties pass statutory foreclosure timelines and whether the town should consider retaining land for public uses in some cases. Sturgis said statutes and staff practice guide whether the town keeps, sells or repurposes foreclosed properties, and that future situations would come to council for a policy decision. Council voted unanimously to authorize acceptance of the payment and execution of necessary documents.
