United Way, city to hold free summer meal block parties at four parks

United Way of the Greater Capital Region and city staff described a summer program of four free meal block parties with partners, alternating lunch and evening events, community partners and a June 30 kickoff.
City council’s Health and Recreation committee on June 16 heard a presentation about a new summer partnership that will offer free meal block parties and family activities at four signature parks.
"These block parties will feature the summer meals sites and all of our summer meals partners will be there. There will be fun activities for kids and families...and it's all free," said Heather Senechal, representing the United Way of the Greater Capital Region and the Summer Meals Collaborative.
The program will run at four parks on alternating Tuesdays through the summer, with some events held at lunchtime and others in the evening to test what works best for families. The events will combine free meals for children and family-focused activities provided by about 15 community partners, including the school district’s farm-to-family program, Sycamore Collaborative, the Children’s Museum of Saratoga, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and local food pantries. Organizers said the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has agreed to sponsor meals for adults at the block parties so that any attendee can be fed regardless of age.
There will be a kickoff celebration on June 30 from 12 to 3 p.m. at Jerry Burrell Park, organizers said. The city’s parks staff will coordinate with the school district on days when school enrichment programs bring children to park sites.
Organizers asked the council to help publicize the schedule once finalized; printed flyers were distributed to committee members during the presentation.
