Public and council consider renaming Mount Vernon’s Dole Center theater for Tina Satin

Trustee Hope Maribel asked the Mount Vernon City Council to consider renaming the theater at the Dole Center for Tina Satin, a local arts leader who taught theater and helped found the Mount Vernon Fine Arts Cultural Center.
Maribel described Satin's long involvement in the city's arts community and read a brief history citing Satin’s work and the cultural center’s founding in 1976 by Satin's daughter, Parthenia. Maribel told the council that one of Satin’s former students who performed at the Open Cage Theater was Denzel Washington.
Council members responded favorably to the proposal during council comments. Councilman Thompson said he was "under her tutelage at one point" and called the idea a "wonderful" and "moving" tribute. Councilwoman Gleason and other members asked Maribel to provide a short biography and any supporting materials to the clerk and indicated that the council is developing a formal naming process for streets, buildings and properties.
No formal resolution or ordinance to rename the theater was introduced or voted on at the meeting. Council members said they would examine the standard process for naming public buildings and would work with the administration to determine next steps if there is consensus to proceed.
Maribel framed the request as a legacy proposal to honor a local arts educator; council members said they were open to reviewing the idea and asked for documentation to begin a formal evaluation.
