The Board of Estimate and Contracts on Tuesday approved salary increases for two grant-funded positions in the Board of Water Supply, saying the adjustments reflect higher certification and reporting requirements.
Officials said the roles — created under a state grant to support lead service line work — were initially established at lower pay and revised as the workload and required skills grew. The board recorded the decision at its June 17 meeting, with Comptroller Morton, Council President Brown and Mayor Patterson Howard voting in favor.
“The positions call for that. In the beginning, you know, they were new positions ... but as the requirements of this work continue to increase, the certifications, the training, the level of skill in reporting ... they made adjustments to even, I believe, the titles and the salaries, for them to come in line with the work that they're doing,” a staff member said during the agenda item.
The board noted that the salaries for the lead service line coordinator and related position are paid from a grant through the New York State Department of Health. No change to the city’s general fund was reported during the discussion.
Roll call for the ordinance showed unanimous approval: Comptroller Morton — aye; Council President Brown — aye; Mayor Patterson Howard — aye.
No timeline for implementation of the new salary rates was specified at the meeting; the board said further resolution details would be provided at a subsequent session.
