Mount Vernon adds recreation assistant and approves renaming Fourth Street Park to Gus Williams Park

The Board of Estimate and Contract approved an ordinance on May 20 authorizing creation of an additional recreation assistant position in the Department of Recreation, reallocating funds from an existing position and amending the adopted 2025 budget accordingly.
During discussion, the commissioner said the existing position will not be needed next year and the assistant post will better serve department needs. The board approved the transfer by roll call (Comptroller Morton, Council President Brown and Mayor Patterson Howard recorded "Aye").
Separately, the board authorized the Department of Recreation to co-sponsor the 2025 Fourth Street Classic Basketball Tournament with Fourth Street Classic Basketball and Ruby Lou and approved temporarily renaming Fourth Street Park to Gus Williams Park for the event. Officials said organizers will provide insurance and plan a temporary plaque unveiling at the ceremony; the board approved the event and name change for the purpose of the ceremony.
