The Utica Common Council on Wednesday adopted a proclamation recognizing Forest Hill Cemetery’s 175th anniversary and expressed appreciation to the Forest Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation for its stewardship and ongoing restoration work.
Councilors recited the proclamation into the record, noting the cemetery was dedicated on June 14, 1850, and that the foundation is raising funds to restore the Childs Chapel. A foundation representative told the council the cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and described planned anniversary activities, including a community reception and scavenger hunt on June 14 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Council members praised the cemetery as a tranquil, historic site and thanked volunteers and trustees for preservation efforts. The council adopted the proclamation by voice vote and directed that the proclamation be included in the official minutes.
